The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests are looking to fill a Support Services Specialist position on the Gunnison Ranger District in Gunnison, Colorado. The Support Services Specialist (SSS) reports to the District Ranger and serves as a primary staff member on the district. This position is entry-level with full promotion potential of GS-08. ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Support Services Specialist (SSS) reports to the District Ranger and serves as a primary staff member on the district. This position provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members on administrative matters. The incumbent will plan, direct, and coordinate a variety of office service programs that principally support office functions.
Services that the SSS will oversee include (but are not limited to) correspondence, communications, procurement of administrative supplies and equipment, printing, property management, space management, records management, mail service, facility maintenance, and office equipment maintenance. The incumbent may serve as the Contracting Officer’s Representative for snow removal and janitorial contracts as well as other contracts on the district. The SSS is a supervisory position for the Customer Service Representative(s)/Visitor Information Specialist(s).
The SSS will provide oversight and coordinate the District Office cost pool account, monitoring and tracking expenditures from this account.
The SSS will assist with all hiring actions as needed, submitting and monitoring SF-52 actions for permanent, temporary and detail opportunities. The SSS assists in coordinating on and off boarding processes for all personnel and serves as district onboarding buddy when needed.
The SSS will make interpretations, decisions, and provide advice to the District Ranger and district staff in applying laws, regulations, directives, and policies to the solution of a wide variety of administrative problems dealing with acquisitions, payroll, human resources, volunteer resources, partnerships, etc.
The SSS may have other duties as assigned such as assisting with the District Safety Program or carrying out other collateral duties.
In short, this position is critical to running district operations and supporting employees.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT:
The Gunnison Ranger District office located in Gunnison, CO, manages approximately 1.2 million acres of National Forest System land, surrounding the communities of Gunnison, Crested Butte, and Lake City. The district includes portions of three counties: Gunnison, Saguache, and Hinsdale. The district manages the land that contains Crested Butte Mountain Resort Ski Area and proposed Monarch Ski Area expansion. The district oversees eight wilderness areas: the West Elk, Raggeds, Maroon-Bells, Fossil Ridge, Collegiate Peaks, La Garita, Uncompahgre, and Powderhorn. The Gunnison Ranger District is a large and complex district with active programs in recreation, timber and silviculture, fire/fuels, range, engineering, wildlife and plant biology, heritage and cultural resources, and hydrology.
COMMUNITY
The City of Gunnison sits at an elevation of 7,703 feet on the Western Slope of Colorado, along the beautiful Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. Gunnison is home to roughly 6,700 residents and is the county seat for Gunnison County which has a population of about 17,000 people. Gunnison provides services to the majority of the rural county, including a top 100 critical access hospital, Gunnison Valley Health. The Town of Crested Butte is located 28 miles from Gunnison and boasts a funky and vibrant community scene.
The Gunnison area- locally known as Gunnison Country- is widely known for its abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Such activities include world renown hiking and mountain biking; hundreds of miles of motorized trails; horseback riding in 8 spectacular Wilderness Areas; rock climbing the 2000 ft cliffs of the Black Canyon National Park; rafting the Taylor River and Gunnison town run; kayaking at the town whitewater park; skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort or Monarch Ski Area; Nordic skiing on the miles of groomed ski trails maintained by the local Nordic clubs; fishing miles of public water or sportfishing for the largest trout in the state on Blue Mesa Reservoir; golfing at 2 beautiful private courses; and hunting in some of the most coveted units in the state.
The Gunnison Watershed School District includes the Lake Preschool and Kindergarten, Gunnison Elementary School, Gunnison Middle School, Gunnison High School, and Crested Butte Community School (Elementary and Secondary). The Gunnison community is home to many young families and hosts various educational and family-friendly events and outreach programs. Western Colorado University, located in Gunnison, is inspiring the next generation with over 100 programs in a small university setting.
The climate in Gunnison can be challenging and rewarding. Summers are gorgeous with an average high of 82 degrees in July. The area enjoys beautiful wildflowers and fall colors. Since Gunnison is in the bottom of several valleys, cold air settles making Gunnison one of the coldest places in the US. Winters can be quite chilly with the average low of -8 degrees in January. Winter brings cold temps but also plenty of the white, fluffy stuff. The area is home to 2 ski areas and abundant backcountry ski opportunities. There are multiple areas open to over the snow motorized activities, including the Kebler Pass area which receives on average 600 inches of snowfall annually. The cold temperatures also provide for unique ice-skating opportunities on Blue Mesa and other alpine lakes, and a robust community passion for hockey.
